Frese FUELSAVE prototype was a major attraction at SMM

When naval architects, ship owners and suppliers to the maritime industry met at this year’s SMM exhibition in Hamburg, one of the hot topics was how to improve the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating. The new Frese FUELSAVE solution caught the visitors’ attention because it can save hundreds of tons of fuel oil per ship every year and serve as an effective solution for owners and operators of commercial marine vessels.

As attention to the CII rating increase, ship owners and operators need to minimize emissions without compromising the safety of life at sea. Technologies that can secure both – decarbonization and maintaining a high level of safety – are in great demand. Frese FUELSAVE is one of those solutions that can do just that – and the reason it is currently patent pending.

Reduce CII by 3-9% without compromising safety

With Frese FUELSAVE, operators can realize the unique fuel savings opportunities embedded in Frese’s proven automatic balancing and control valve technology. The control system collects all the sensor data to ensure continuous optimum pump operation at any given load condition.

This leads to large emission reductions. In fact, the CII of the entire vessel can be reduced by 3-9%, depending on vessel type. The cost-effective equipment package with a payback time of less than two years offers an ongoing reduction of OPEX during the vessel’s lifetime.

It also caught the visitors’ attention that FUELSAVE enables operators to secure the required cooling of critical machinery in the engine room without invalidating the main engine warranty – something that has not previously been possible. FUELSAVE does not reduce the cooling consumption of the main engine, the scavenging air cooler or other critical components. It reduces the cooling of all the external consumers without compromising the safety of the ship.

Imagining how the system works in real life can be a bit difficult. That is why we brought a 420 kg prototype to the stand. The prototype showed exactly how the system works, and visitors could see that when the temperature rises on one consumer, a valve opens and flow increases, and if you close, the flow decreases, and the pump reduces its speed. And that is where operators get the major savings from.
