OPTIMA Compact goes digital

Our new Modbus Actuator offers several new functionalities that will enable you to optimize your heating or cooling system via BMS.

- Energy optimization requires data and insight, and that is exactly what the Frese Modbus Actuator delivers. Not only will it allow you to operate the pressure independent control valves in your heating and cooling system remotely via the building’s BMS, it will also provide you with important information about system performance and potential efficiency improvements.

This is how Product Manager Przemyslaw Klosiak introduces the latest addition to Frese’s product portfolio.

The Modbus Actuator comes in two different sizes and is compatible with our patented OPTIMA Compact series from DN15 to DN32 and DN40 to DN50.

The complete library of Frese valves is stored in the actuator, easing the commissioning process, as flow setting can be done remotely. The actuator itself is very compact and can be mounted in any direction due to its IP54 protection class.

Monitor the temperature difference

This level of flexibility extends to the actuator’s other benefits. By connecting two temperature sensors directly to the actuator – one on the supply line and one on the return line – it is possible to monitor the temperature difference and observe how every single terminal unit performs. This is particularly useful in cooling systems, which often suffer from “Low Delta T Syndrome” leading to reduced energy efficiency.

Any PT1000 sensor from any manufacturer can be used, which makes it a very flexible solution for the end customer, says Przemyslaw Klosiak.

The measured temperature difference, along with the flow rate indication feedback from the actuator to the BMS, enables the system operator to calculate the energy consumption in each terminal unit. With this insight it is possible to monitor the system in its entirety and to identify specific places where adjustments can be made to improve energy efficiency and save money.

Precise and diverse insight

- Other sensor types can also be connected and controlled from the actuator level. In a hotel room it might be relevant to install a window contact sensor or a room occupancy sensor and have the system turn the heating or cooling on or off according to need. You can get more precise and much more diverse insight, and you can make necessary adjustments from behind your desk in the control room, Przemyslaw Klosiak explains.
