Go to Image BankSafety valves discharge surplus quantities of air, water, or steam from water tanks or piping systems such as heating -, hot domestic water -, and solar heating systems.
Safety valves are to be mounted on top of the boiler or heat exchanger. There should be no isolation ball valves or other reductions of area between safety valve and boiler/heat exchanger. The discharge pipe (at least 15 mm internal diameter) from the safety valve should end in a drain with open and visible discharge orifice.
The safety valve for hot domestic water is to be mounted on the cold water pipe of heat exchanger of hot water tank. There should be no isolation ball valves or other reductions of area between safety valve and boiler/heat exchanger. The discharge pipe from the safety valve should end in a drain with open and visible discharge orifice.
Turn the handle to the first notch, and the valve is completely open. The valve can be checked, and the system can be drained of water through the safety valve. Turn again and the valve acts as a normal safety valve.
